Visually audacious director Bertrand Bonello fashions his most accomplished film to date: a sci-fi epic, inspired by Henry James’ turn-of-the-century novella, suffused with mounting dread and a haunting sense of mystery. Punctuated by a career-defining, three-role performance by Léa Seydoux, THE BEAST poignantly conveys humanity’s struggle against dissociative identity and emotionless existence.

The year is 2044: artificial intelligence controls all facets of a stoic society as humans routinely “erase” their feelings. Hoping to eliminate pain caused by their past-life romances, Gabrielle (Seydoux) continually falls in love with different incarnations of Louis (George MacKay). Set first in Belle Époque-era Paris, Louis is a British man who woos her away from a cold husband, then in early 21st Century Los Angeles, he is a disturbed American bent on delivering violent “retribution.” Will the process allow Gabrielle to fully connect with Louis in the present, or are the two doomed to repeat their previous fates?

In English and French with English subtitles.

Those attending the showing on Wednesday, May 8th will have a chance to win a ticket to a screening of SO UNREAL at this year’s Seattle International Film Festival!

CRITIC’S PICK! “An audacious interdimensional romance, techno-thriller and Los Angeles noir rolled up in one.” Beatrice Loayza, The New York Times

“What [Bonello] delivers is not just a densely packed art movie but the most potent horror picture of the decade so far.” Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com

Tantura (PCRF Benefit Screening)

94min · digital
  • Wednesday, May 15, 2024, 7:30pm

Free screening with a $5-or-more suggested donation at the door. All proceeds will go to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), the primary aid org in Gaza, providing medical and humanitarian relief to children and families there. Reserve advanced tickets online or in-person the day-of show.

Hundreds of Palestinian villages were depopulated in 1948. To Israelis, it was the War of Independence, to Palestinians it was "Al Nakba" (The Catastrophe). In the late 1990s, graduate student Teddy Katz conducted research into a large-scale massacre that had allegedly occurred in the village of Tantura during the Nakba. His work later came under attack and his reputation was ruined, but 140 hours of audio testimonies remain. Director Alon Schwarz revisits former Israeli soldiers as well as Palestinian residents in an effort to re-examine what happened in Tantura.

In Hebrew and Arabic with English subtitles.

Additional donations may be made at any time by going to PCRF’s donation page.

CRITIC’S PICK! “A disturbing portrait of how very human impulses — passivity, rationalization, social pressures — can shape the writing of history.” Ben Kenigsberg, The New York Times

Tantura, a haunting unearthing, gives voice to a tragedy that must never be forgotten.” Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.com

Amidst a period of unprecedented world events, an eighteen-year-old girl’s life is placed on hold. Isolated in her bedroom, she falls under the spell of the mysterious vlogger Patricia Coma. As time carries on, the lines between her dreams, fears, hopes, and reality begin to blur into one another.

From French master Bertrand Bonello (THE BEAST, NOCTURAMA), COMA is “a neo-Lynchian slow burn masterpiece” (International Cinephile Society) that creates a dream-like representation of our present. A “delirious marvel” (The Playlist) that breaks apart boundaries of genre, filmmaking, and storytelling, COMA bravely confronts the anxieties of today in order to imagine the possibilities of the future.

In French with English subtitles.

“It’s a willful jumble of ideas and styles that gives the impression of an anxious mind. While the protagonist may be a teenager, this is a concept many ages could relate to after the past few years… a topical and quietly thought-provoking watch.” Anna Smith, Deadline Hollywood

“[An] attention-deficit delight.” Charles Bramesco, Little White Lies

Celebrated directorial duo the Ross Brothers (BLOODY NOSE, EMPTY POCKETS and CONTEMPORARY COLOR) turn their pioneering hybrid lens to the cinematic road trip with GASOLINE RAINBOW. Undoubtedly candid yet deeply loving, this is an expansive portrait of the new generation as told in their own words.

With high school in the rearview, five teenagers from inland Oregon embark on one last adventure. Piling into a van with a busted tail light, their mission takes them to a place they’ve never been — the Pacific coast, five hundred miles away. The plan, in full: “F*** it.” Through desert wilderness, industrial backwaters, and city streets, they connect with outsiders on the fringes and discover their lives will be determined by the trails they blaze themselves. These are forgotten kids from a forgotten town, but they have their freedom and they have each other, hurtling toward an unknowable future — and The Party at the End of the World.

A SXSW and Venice Film Festival selection, GASOLINE RAINBOW is a mesmerizing ride depicting a wild and true coming-of-age. With a beating heart and an exuberant spirit, this rhapsodic look at today’s American West reminds us of the timeless joys of community.

The 7pm showing on Sunday, May 19th will feature a live, in-person Q&A with filmmakers The Ross Brothers and actors Tony Aburto, Makai Garza and Nichole Dukes!

“The Ross brothers are organic, brilliant filmmakers, people who know how to capture their subjects without getting in their way.” Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

Gasoline Rainbow is a joyous movie for everyone who’s ever sought community and found it waiting for them where they least expect it.” Alissa Wilkinson, Vox

25th anniversary!

Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of love, forgiveness and meaning in the San Fernando Valley. Featuring a star-studded ensemble that includes Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Phillip Baker Hall, William H. Macy and John C. Reilly, MAGNOLIA offers a bold and empathetic look at the strange connections that bind us together.

Part of our 20th Anniversary Celebration Series!

“One of the most enthralling and exhilarating American movies in ages.” Geoff Andrew, Time Out

Magnolia is operatic in its ambition… one of those rare films that works in two entirely different ways. In one sense, it tells absorbing stories, filled with detail, told with precision and not a little humor. On another sense, it is a parable. The message of the parable, as with all good parables, is expressed not in words but in emotions.” Roger Ebert

In this animated neo-noir sci-fi thriller set in the year 2200, private detective Aline Ruby and her android partner Carlos Rivera are hired by a wealthy businessman to track down a notorious hacker. On Mars, they descend deep into the underbelly of the planet's capital city where they uncover a darker story of brain farms, corruption, and a missing girl who holds a secret about the robots that threatens to change the face of the universe.

“Ultra-cool and dazzlingly animated.” David Ehrlich, indieWire

Mars Express at once feels rich in its design, and complex in its stories, but at its heart it’s asking the question that most works of art ask: what does it mean to be human?” Shelagh Rowan-Legg, ScreenAnarchy

It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This

A found-footage horror movie 20 years in the making. Never to be released online. Can only be seen in theaters. Featuring a live Zoom Q&A with the filmmakers following the movie!

When two scary movie fanatics buy an abandoned duplex to shoot their next indie horror film in, they are delighted to find the dilapidated property is even creepier than it appears. Putting their years of horror filmmaking and amateur ghost hunting to use, they team up with an old friend to document the cult of random strangers who gather outside the building in a zombie-like trance. As the three friends gleefully chase their obsession with the supernatural, their investigation becomes an increasingly ecstatic quest to see just how scary their real-life horror movie can get.

“An increasingly uncomfortable descent into the weird, guaranteed to have you leaving the theater chilled.” Matt Konopka, Dread Central

“From its first unflinching moments to the unanswered questions of its conclusion, [this] is the kind of horror that leaves you feeling immersed, unsafe, and afraid to be left in the dark.” Grace Detwiler, Rue Morgue

TIME TO GET PUMPED!

Roger’s gym is facing financial ruin and their hottest aerobics instructors keep getting poached by rival health club, The Rejuvinarium. In an attempt to save the gym, Roger decides to rebrand: now it’s a fitness-based single’s club, catering to the young and sexy…or those who aspire to be, anyways. This movie has it all… We got chumps to hunks, sweaty sexercize on the weight machines, a co-ed basement jacuzzi and an Aerobathon competition between the two rival gyms! Who will win? Who will lose? Who cares? When you hear the bangin’ finale song, we’ll pump up the volume and you’ll pump your fist in the air because FITNESS RULES!!

“Packed with sweaty exercise montages and ’80s trappings — from its polyester fashions, to the neon-eyesore set decoration — [This movie] is so deliriously disjointed that I often wondered if the reels were out of order. That’s a sure sign of exploitation greatness.” – Shock Cinema Magazine

“This film is f***ing amazing! First, it has more montages than any movie I’ve ever seen before. Second, if you’re into aerobics, buff bodies and outrageous eighties work out attire, then this is your movie. Third, if you like your 80’s soundtracks filled with mindless synth-pop songs from artists you’ve never heard of before, this movie has quite a list. Finally, there’s the nudity. There’s so much of it I don’t know where to begin, but the best thing about it is, it’s completely unnecessary. You have about as much chance of spotting a unicorn than seeing this movie, but if you get the opportunity, DO IT!” – Michael Monterastelli: Collecting VHS, CHUD.com

Second encore screening added – June 1st!

“Starts strange, gets stranger, and yet remains resolutely adorable… embraces the defiant glee of art cinema and distills it into something so thoroughly pure and sincere that it is surely hard not to fall in love with it.” Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Alliance of Women Film Journalists

“It’s sure to develop a significant cult following with its unique mix of silent-era slapstick, animation elements, theme-park-style critter costumes, and general air of inspired absurdity.” Dennis Harvey, Variety

“Steroidally swollen with gags and smarts.” Guy Maddin
