YOU ARE WHO YOU EAT

25th anniversary! Directed by Antonia Bird, RAVENOUS compares American colonialism and capitalism to the insatiable bloodlust of cannibalism. When Captain John Boyd (Guy Pearce) investigates reports of missing persons at Fort Spencer in 1840s California, he finds frostbitten survivor Colqhoun (Robert Carlyle)—but can Colqhoun’s mad story about a bloodthirsty Colonel Ives be trusted? Co-starring Joseph Runningfox and Sheila Tousey, and remixing vampire tropes alongside stories of the Donner Party, “Colorado Cannibal” Alferd Packer, and the Algonquian Wendigo, RAVENOUS is a smart and bloody good cult classic in its own class, featuring a delectable score by Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn.

“In an age of fast-food horror films, Ravenous is that rare and well-seasoned meal that leaves you hungry for more. Eat it up.” Joe McGovern, Entertainment Weekly

Abruptio certainly offers fans something completely different and unique, making it a welcome breath of fresh air in an age of endless sequels, remakes, and reboots… Put simply, this is a film that’s just too weird to ignore.” David Gelmini, Dread Central

“The phrase, ‘You’ve never seen anything like this,’ tends to be grossly overused in movie reviews. But I can assure you, in this case, it’s objectively true… With impressive creativity and craftsmanship, Abruptio is astonishing — a film full of puppets that probes the depth of humanity. It will draw many viewers in on the strength of its unique gimmick. But rest assured; it’s far from a one-trick pony.” Stephanie Malone, Morbidly Beautiful

LITTLE MONSTERS tells the story of Brian (Fred Savage), a sixth-grader who’s recently moved to a new town and made friends with Maurice (Howie Mandel) — the monster who lives under Brian’s bed! Maurice introduces Brian to the world of monsters, where junk food rules, adults aren’t allowed, and the fun and games never end. But when Brian’s brother is kidnapped, it’s time for Brian to get serious and fight the monsters on their turf in this zany cult favorite.

Part of our annual horror series All Monsters Attack!

Little Monsters is a part of that kids movie period where the movies aimed at young audiences didn’t patronize or water everything down… a very entertaining and sweet little buddy comedy that adds a dimension to the monsters under the bed myth… a definite gateway title for blossoming horror fans.” Felix Vasquez, Cinema Crazed

Thundercrack!

Curt McDowell · 1975

  • Saturday, Oct 5, 2024, 8:30pm

Presented by SECS Fest! In 1975, Curt McDowell and writer/actor George Kuchar created the exceptionally perverse and utterly brilliant THUNDERCRACK!, a film not recommended for those with tender sensibilities.

Witness if you dare… THUNDERCRACK!… the world’s only underground kinky art adult horror film, complete with four men, three women and rampaging circus animals. With the initial setup of an atmospheric gothic tale — a dark and stormy night breakdown featuring a creepy old house on the hill — it quickly turns into an eerie orgy of graphic humor, horror and sex. A tour de force of underground filmmaking with a plot beyond description, this film fully exposes itself with amazing dialogue and trash-noir lighting through which to peer at the pickles, the puke and the polymorphs.

*No one under 18 admitted.*

“The cult classic of weirdo hardcore, an irresistibly infuriating bad taste whip of raunch and skewed melodrama, like a very horny Soap, that quite literally leaves you unsure of whether you’re coming or going.” Time Out

“This is a full-blown, near-perfect parody which cobbles together a cast of Irwin Allenesque characters, and then steeps them in hardcore sex and disturbing imagery, until it becomes a twisted, Old Dark House-style soap opera… Without question, Thundercrack! is one of the great underground sleaze epics, and a touchstone for all independent filmmakers to come!” Steven Puchalski, Shock Cinema Magazine

Videodrome: The Director’s Cut

David Cronenberg · 1983

William Kennedy Memorial Screening!

When Max Renn goes looking for edgy new shows for his sleazy cable TV station, he stumbles across the pirate broadcast of a hyperviolent torture show called Videodrome. As he struggles to unearth the origins of the program, he embarks on a hallucinatory journey into a shadow world of right-wing conspiracies, sadomasochistic sex games, and bodily transformation. Starring James Woods and Debbie Harry, with groundbreaking special effects makeup by Rick Baker, VIDEODROME is one of David Cronenberg’s most original and provocative works, fusing social commentary with shocking elements of sex and violence.

In June 2021, Seattle lost one of its most dedicated cinephiles, William Kennedy. One of Bill’s final wishes was that people gather to watch VIDEODROME in his memory. A portion of the proceeds from this screening will be donated to Evergreen Playhouse in Centralia, where Bill performed in several productions prior to moving to Seattle.

Part of our annual horror series All Monsters Attack!

Videodrome has lost none of its power to disturb, none of its potency as a catalyst for meaningful introspection… It remains the rare breed of sociological provocation that might change minds. It’s a looking glass. It’s a masterpiece.” Walter Chaw, RogerEbert.com

Part of our annual horror series All Monsters Attack!

“Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street rightfully earns its place as a classic… From the moment [Freddy Krueger] pierced through the silver screen, he changed the course of slasher films forever and left us with a spine-chilling question to keep us up at night: what if it isn’t all ‘just a dream’?” Rae Torres, Collider

After calling a late-night party hotline that promises out-of-this-world fun, uptight yuppie Conor Sweeney must battle the pint-sized forces of evil unleashed through his phone line, led by the maniacal rock n’ roll goblin, FRANKIE FREAKO.

“It’s delightful, it’s silly, and it’s often extremely entertaining. If you yearn for a fun retro throwback to the era of Boglins, pay-per-minute infomercials, and beige yuppie suburban households, this is the film for you.” Joe Lipsett, Bloody Disgusting

Frankie Freako is freakin’ fun! There is a playful nihilism that keeps the viewer on its toes, never quite knowing where the film is going, but eager for the journey.” J Hurtado, ScreenAnarchy

BLADE II takes everything that you loved about the action-horror fun machine known as BLADE — Wesley Snipes wearing sunglasses, Wesley Snipes driving cool cars, and Wesley Snipes destroying vampires — and multiplies it by a thousand while adding beautiful visuals courtesy of director Guillermo del Toro who filters Blade’s pulp origins through a gothic haze of Mario Bava-esque neon, setting the stage for one of the greatest pop-horror action adventure movies to date. Co-presented by Kung Fu Clubhouse!

After searching for an old friend, Blade must align himself with a high-powered team of vampires to take on a greater evil than either has ever faced—a new kind of super-vampire that is itself on a vicious hunt to eradicate both races.

Part of our annual horror series All Monsters Attack!

“A B-picture in love with the zest of its comic-book origins, it embodies that medium’s pulse-pounding spiritedness and silliness.” Elvis Mitchell, The New York Times

Blade II is a really rather brilliant vomitorium of viscera, a comic book with dreams of becoming a textbook for mad surgeons. There are shots here of the insides of vampires that make your average autopsy look like a slow afternoon at Supercuts.” Roger Ebert

Charon (aka The Jar) – New Restoration (with director Bruce Toscano)

Bruce Toscano · 1984

  • Friday, Oct 18, 2024, 9:15pm

After getting into an auto accident with an old man, Paul brings the man back to his apartment to heal him. When the old man mysteriously vanishes, Paul finds himself alone with a curious possession the man had left behind: a jar containing some sort of embryonic creature; a creature that consumes Paul’s mind, leading to an onslaught of inexplicable hallucinations that plague Paul at every turn.

CHARON, aka THE JAR, was released by Magnum Entertainment in 1984 and was omnipresent in video rental stores. While the film was shot in scope, the distributor released it in a butchered cropped presentation, cutting out about half of the intended frame in a murky VHS transfer. Now, 40 years later, this new restoration from Terror Vision finally offers director Bruce Toscano’s unique vision in all its beautiful, color-drenched glory, as it was always meant to be seen.

Director Bruce Toscano will be present for a live Q&A! Part of our annual horror series All Monsters Attack!

“Though foolishly in the past tossed aside as a ‘poor man’s Eraserhead’ or other such silliness, The Jar is an astonishingly singular work of harrowing personal expression that will in equal parts confound, enrage, enrapture, endear, and eventually swallow you whole if you let yourself plug into its otherworldly wavelength.” William Morris, Oscarbate Film Collective

“Imagine if Jodorowsky, Lynch and Argento shot a film together while tripping mushrooms in early 1980s Denver! Shot on 35mm, transfered to video, released/mangled on VHS, lost for almost 40 years. This psychotronic mind-bending nightmare has to be seen to be believed!” Theresa Mercado, Vinegar Syndrome / Scream Screen

One of the few slashers produced during the early 1980s revival of 3D movies, SILENT MADNESS knows exactly what audiences want. And it delivers. A glitch in the computer system at an asylum for the criminally insane results in the release of the wrong patient – a homicidal maniac named Howard Johns. It’s up to Joan Gilmore (Belinda Montgomery, DYNASTY), one of the institute’s top doctors, to track him down as the killings begin. Utilizing dreamy gelled lighting, excellent 3-D photography from Gerald Feil (FRIDAY THE 13TH PART III), and over-the-top kills, SILENT MADNESS is a blast from beginning to end.

Brimming with perverse sexual tension and exquisitely gross practical effects, HELLRAISER creates a wholly unique world that viscerally lives and breathes, slowly oozing new life into the darkest corners of existence in every frame.

“Horror is at its best when it’s relentless. Clive Barker knows this, and his debut feature as director is so gleefully vicious, so relentlessly grim that it’s going to be very hard for fans of the genre not to like it.” William Thomas, Empire Magazine
