Frank Dux (Jean Claude Van Damme), an American martial artist serving in the military, decides to leave the army to compete in the Kumite, an illegal martial arts tournament in Hong Kong that features fights to the death if the participants wish it. Once the competition begins, Dux becomes the adversary of ruthless Kumite champion Chong Li (Bolo Yeung) and the two prepare to square off at the height of the secret tournament. Which one will survive?
Based on the "true" story of the real-life Frank Dux, BLOODSPORT is an of-its-time martial arts powerhouse. Light on story and heavy on cheese, it's an 80s classic worth celebrating for its 35th anniversary!
“Bloodsport might not be anything even close to a masterpiece, but as a fun ’80s action romp it is hard to deny the effectiveness of it.” Carson Timar, Filmotomy
“The point at which inept fight choreography, weak performances, and a threadbare script are transcended by sheer, goofy earnestness. Jean-Claude Van Damme arrives fully formed as a screen persona – lacking the guile or vanity of many of his fellow Eighties action stars, simply in need of a role that could put his physicality and subdued demeanor to best use.” HKFanatic, Letterboxd
