Lakota Nation vs. United States

Laura Tomaselli, Jesse Short Bull · 2022
120min · DCP
  • Sunday, Nov 5, 2023, 5:30pm

Free screening for Native American Heritage Month! Introduced by Rueben Twinn Jr. of the Oglala Sioux Nation.

It is the most sacred place on earth, the birthplace of the Lakota that has shaped thought, identity and philosophy for the Oceti Sakowin since time immemorial—the life-giving land known as the Black Hills. Yet with the arrival of the first Europeans in 1492, the sacred land has been the site of conflict between the people it has nurtured, and the settler state seeking to exploit and redefine it in its own image. This powerful new documentary is a searing testament to the strength of the Oyate and a visually stunning rejoinder to the distorted image of a people long shaped by Hollywood. Lakota Nation vs. United States is a lyrical and provocative testament to a land and a people who have survived removal, exploitation and genocide–and whose best days are yet to come. Narrated by poet and Oglala Lakota tribe member Layli Long Soldier.

“CRITIC’S PICK! It has every right to be a furious tragedy. Instead, it’s a slacker comedy that swaps punchlines for laid-back, lived-in absurdities. The jokes land so feather-light you’re not sure if you should laugh.” Amy Nicholson, New York Times

Free screening for Native American Heritage Month! Introduced by Katsi Hill of the Oneida Nation of the Thames and founder/Executive Director of Mother Nation.

CLEARCUT is an unforgettable exploration of Indigenous folklore, newly restored in 4K from the original 35mm answer print. A white lawyer arrives in Northern Ontario to defend Indigenous activists who are blocking a logging company’s clearcut of old growth on their land. A pacifist by nature, and perceiving himself as sympathetic to Indigenous concerns, the lawyer finds his values shaken when he is paired with an angry, rogue Indigenous activist named Arthur (Graham Greene, one of Canada’s most towering and beloved Indigenous actors). Arthur insists on kidnapping the head of the logging company in the hopes of teaching him the price of his destruction.
